Gent, Belgium

March 27-29, 2006

March 27, 2006

The morning of the 27th we took the train from Cologne, Germany to Gent, Belgium. We stayed at Hotel Flandria, a small, cheap hotel near St. Bavo Cathedral and the Belfort. We walked around the beautiful canals and had a Hoegaarden Grand Cru at a small tavern. Most everything closes at 6pm in this quaint town.

After a day of walking around Blythe and I met up with her friends, Sven and Tally, natives of Belgium. That evening we got a nice tour of the city and partook of the nightlife. We had a good scare upon returning to the hotel as we could not get back in. Apparently there is a trick to opening the broken front door the hotel management failed to tell us. About an hour later and wet with rain we finally made it in.

We took a train to Brugge this day, and returned to Gent in the early evening. Blythe and did more exploring around the Gent before meeting back up with Sven and Tally on a interesting little bar on a boat. I had a wonderful conversation with their friend, Nicolaus, as Europeans are very keen to talk about politics.

Much of today was spent on the train from Gent back to Amsterdam, were we would fly out of the next day back home. Blythe and I enjoyed the last few hours of our vacation walking around the interesting corridors of Amsterdam.
